- โAn AS level doesn't add points if you also take the A level in the same subject; only the A level counts.
- โA Scottish Higher doesn't add points if you take the Advanced Higher in the same subject.
- โMany offers are made in grades (e.g. ABB), not points, and some courses need specific subjects.
- โSome universities cap points from the EPQ or don't count AS levels, so read each course's entry requirements.
- โGCSEs don't carry UCAS points, but courses often require minimum GCSE grades in English and maths.

What is the UCAS Points Calculator?
This UCAS points calculator adds up the UCAS Tariff points for your post-16 qualifications, the number many UK universities and colleges use to set entry requirements such as "112 UCAS points" or "120 points from at least two A levels". Add each qualification you have or expect, pick the grade, and the calculator totals your points, shows the points each one contributes, and tells you which A-level grade combination your total matches.
The points come from UCAS's official Tariff tables, used since the 2017 admissions cycle. An A level is worth 56 points at A*, 48 at A, 40 at B, 32 at C, 24 at D and 16 at E. An AS level is worth 20 at A down to 6 at E, and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is worth 28 at A* down to 8 at E. BTEC Nationals are tariffed by size: a BTEC Extended Diploma is worth 168 points at D*D*D* down to 48 at PPP, a Diploma 112 at D*D* down to 32 at PP, and an Extended Certificate 56 at D* down to 16 at P. A T Level is worth 168 at Distinction*, 144 at Distinction, 120 at Merit and 96 or 72 at Pass depending on the core grade.
International Baccalaureate subjects are tariffed separately rather than as a whole diploma: a Higher Level 7 is worth 56 points, 6 is 48, 5 is 32, 4 is 24 and 3 is 12; a Standard Level 7 is 28 down to 6 for a 3; Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each worth 12 at A down to 4 at E. In Scotland, a Higher is worth 33 at A, 27 at B, 21 at C and 15 at D, and an Advanced Higher 56 at A, 48 at B, 40 at C and 32 at D.
Worked example: A level grades of A, B and B plus a B in the EPQ give 48 + 40 + 40 + 20 = 148 points, more than an AAA offer of 144 points. Three A levels at BBB alone give 120 points; adding a BTEC Extended Certificate at Merit takes the total to 152. Many universities make offers in grades (for example AAB) rather than points, and some only count points from certain qualifications, so check each course's entry requirements.
UCAS Tariff rules worth knowing: points from an AS level aren't counted if you go on to take the A level in the same subject, and Higher points aren't counted if you also take the Advanced Higher in that subject. Universities decide which qualifications they accept, and some cap the number of points that can come from things like the EPQ.
