Healthy: 37.0% net margin, $24.07 per order and $9,627 a month. Your ads need a ROAS of at least 1.79 (56% of revenue as ad spend) just to break even on each order.

Order value = price + shipping charged. Profit per order = order value − VAT − (order value × card % + fixed fee) − transaction fee − COGS − shipping − packaging − ads − (plan + apps) ÷ orders. Break-even ROAS = order value ÷ profit before ads.

Common Shopify profit mistakes
  • Forgetting that card fees are charged on shipping too, not just the product price.
  • Using a third-party gateway on Basic and paying an extra 2% to Shopify on every order.
  • Judging ads by platform ROAS without knowing your break-even ROAS.
  • Leaving out app subscriptions, refunds and discount codes, which often add up to several percent of revenue.
💡 Pro tips
  • →Use Shopify Payments where it's available to avoid the extra transaction fee.
  • →Check the plan comparison each quarter. Growing volume can make a higher plan cheaper.
  • →Set campaign ROAS targets comfortably above your break-even ROAS to leave room for returns.
  • →Raise average order value with bundles. The fixed card fee and shipping get spread over more revenue.

Next step: test your campaigns against this break-even in the ROAS Calculator, or compare channels with the Amazon FBA and Daraz calculators.

What is the Shopify Profit Calculator?

The Shopify Profit Calculator shows what you actually keep from each Shopify order and each month, after every cost that sits between the customer's payment and your bank account. That covers the product itself, shipping and packaging, Shopify Payments card fees or your third-party gateway's fees, Shopify's own transaction fee where it applies, ad spend per order, and the fixed monthly cost of your plan and apps. You get profit per order, net margin, monthly profit, the number of orders you need to cover fixed costs, and the break-even ROAS your ads must reach.

Shopify charges in two ways. Every plan has a monthly subscription. In the US, plans cost $19 (Basic), $49 (Grow) and $299 (Advanced) a month billed yearly. In the UK they cost £19, £49 and £259, with Plus from £1,800 (as of October 2026). Payments are charged per order. With Shopify Payments, US online card rates are 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. UK rates are 2% + 25p, 1.7% + 25p, 1.5% + 25p and 1.3% + 25p on Plus. These are the standard domestic card rates, and Amex and international cards cost more. If you use a third-party gateway instead, you pay that provider's rate and Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% depending on your plan.

Because higher plans trade a bigger subscription for lower per-order fees, the cheapest plan depends on your volume. The plan comparison table runs your exact numbers through every plan and highlights the one that leaves you the most profit, so you know when an upgrade pays for itself. All rates stay editable, because Shopify adjusts them and some stores negotiate their own.

Worked example (US, Basic plan, Shopify Payments): a $60 product with $5 shipping charged, so the customer pays $65. The product costs $18, shipping costs you $7 and packaging $1.50. The card fee is 2.9% + 30¢ = $2.19, and you spend $12 on ads per order. Profit before ads is $36.32, so the break-even ROAS is 1.79. After ads you make $24.31 per order. At 400 orders a month, minus the $19 plan and $80 of apps, monthly profit is $9,627, a 37.0% net margin. At that volume the Grow plan would leave $9,649, so upgrading would save a little.

Use the result to set ad targets. Any campaign with a ROAS below your break-even ROAS loses money on every sale. To dig into campaign performance, take your break-even ROAS to the ROAS Calculator. To compare channels, run the same product through the Amazon FBA and Daraz calculators.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify take per sale?+
With Shopify Payments, only the card processing fee: in the US 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. In the UK it is 2% + 25p, 1.7% + 25p, 1.5% + 25p and 1.3% + 25p on Plus (standard domestic online cards, as of October 2026). If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify also charges a transaction fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% by plan, on top of the provider's own fee.
Does Shopify charge transaction fees if I use Shopify Payments?+
No. Shopify's help centre says third-party transaction fees are not charged on orders processed through Shopify Payments (including Shop Pay), or on manual methods such as cash on delivery and bank transfer. You only pay the card processing rate.
What is break-even ROAS and how do I calculate it?+
Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which ads eat all your profit. It equals the order value divided by your profit per order before ad spend. For example, $65 ÷ $36.32 = 1.79. A campaign with a ROAS above 1.79 makes money, and one below it loses money on every order.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for my store?+
It depends on your monthly sales. Higher plans cost more per month but charge lower card rates. The plan comparison table in this calculator runs your exact orders and prices through every plan and highlights the one with the highest monthly profit.
What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?+
Net margins of 10–20% after ads are common for healthy direct-to-consumer stores. Products with gross margins below about 50% often struggle to stay profitable once paid acquisition is included. Use the calculator to see how much ad spend per order your margin can absorb.
Should I include VAT or sales tax in the price?+
In the UK, enter your VAT-inclusive price and set VAT to 20% if you are VAT-registered. The calculator removes the VAT before working out profit, while card fees are still charged on the full amount. In the US, sales tax is added on top of your price at checkout, so leave VAT at 0.
Are Amex and international cards charged differently?+
Yes. The plan rates are for standard domestic online cards. In the UK, for example, Shopify lists Amex and international cards at 3.1% + 25p on Basic. If many of your customers pay that way, raise the processing % field to a blended rate.
What costs do people forget in Shopify profit?+
Usually apps (often $50–300 a month in total), payment fees on the shipping you charge, returns and refunds, discount codes, and the cost of free shipping. Put average refunds and discounts into the product cost field to see your real margin.
