Formula: 5 marla × 225 sq ft = 1,125 sq ft · 1 kanal = 20 marla · 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft · 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft · 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft

What this means: 5 marla is 1,125 sq ft on a 225 sq ft marla. The same "5 marla" is 1,125 sq ft on a housing-society marla but 1,361.25 sq ft on a revenue marla — a gap of 236.25 sq ft (21%). Always check which marla your documents use.

Common mistakes
  • Comparing prices per marla between a society plot (225 sq ft) and revenue land (272.25 sq ft) without converting to sq ft first.
  • Assuming "1 kanal = 4,500 sq ft" for agricultural land — in the fard it is usually 5,445 sq ft.
  • Confusing plot area (marla/kanal) with covered area (built floor space across storeys).
  • Rounding plot sizes: 35 × 65 ft is 2,275 sq ft, slightly more than 10 marla (2,250 sq ft).
💡 Pro tips
  • →Ask the seller to write the marla standard (225 or 272.25 sq ft) on the agreement.
  • →For revenue land, request the fard from the Punjab Land Records Authority service centre and convert its kanal–marla–sarsai figures here.
  • →Compare listings by price per square foot, not price per marla.
  • →Planning to build? Take the covered area to the House Construction Cost Calculator.

What is the Marla to Square Feet Converter (Marla, Kanal, Sq Yd)?

The Marla to Square Feet Converter turns any Pakistani land measurement into every unit you are likely to meet in a sale deed, allotment letter, bank valuation or property ad: marla, kanal, square feet, square yards (gaz), square metres, acres and hectares. What makes it different is that it asks which marla you mean, because in Pakistan the marla is not one fixed size.

The marla in most housing schemes is 225 sq ft (25 square yards). The Lahore Development Authority Building Regulations define a marla as 25 sq yd or 225 sq ft (20.90 m²) and a kanal as 20 marla or 500 sq yd. DHA Lahore's Construction & Development Regulations use the same 225 sq ft figure, and Bahria Town and most approved private schemes follow it. Land revenue records (the fard, jamabandi and patwari measurements) use the older British-era marla of 272.25 sq ft. This comes from a karam (measuring rod) of 5.5 ft: one square karam is 30.25 sq ft and 9 square karams make one marla. At this size an acre is exactly 160 marla, or 8 kanal. Some schemes and localities quote a 250 sq ft marla, so for any odd figure use the custom option.

Worked example: a 5 marla plot in DHA or an LDA scheme is 5 × 225 = 1,125 sq ft, which is 125 sq yd or about 104.52 m². The same "5 marla" in a revenue record is 5 × 272.25 = 1,361.25 sq ft (151.25 sq yd, about 126.46 m²). That is 236.25 sq ft more, a 21% difference. When land is priced per marla, a gap that size can change the deal by lakhs of rupees. A 1 kanal plot is 4,500 sq ft on the 225 marla and 5,445 sq ft on the 272.25 marla.

Typical plot shapes are also built in. A 5 marla society plot is usually 25 × 45 ft, a 10 marla plot 35 × 65 ft, and a 1 kanal plot 50 × 90 ft. Enter any length and width to get the plot size in marla instead of guessing. For overseas Pakistanis in the UAE or UK, the square metre, acre and hectare columns make it easy to compare with plot and apartment sizes abroad.

Use the converter to check property listings, compare a revenue-record area with a society allotment, plan construction (pair it with our House Construction Cost Calculator), or settle a family land division fairly. If an ad or a document doesn't say which marla it uses, ask the seller, the society office or the patwari, and get it in writing before you pay.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Pick the marla standard that matches your documents: 225 sq ft for LDA, DHA, Bahria and most societies, 272.25 sq ft for revenue (patwari) land, 250 sq ft, or a custom value.
  2. 2Enter the area and choose its unit, or tap a quick preset such as 5 marla or 1 kanal.
  3. 3Read the converted values in every unit. They update as you type.
  4. 4Check the comparison table to see how the answer changes under the other marla standards.
  5. 5Use the plot-dimension box to turn a length × width in feet into marla and kanal.
  6. 6Copy the share link to send the exact conversion to a buyer, seller or family member.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in 1 marla?+
It depends on the standard. In LDA, DHA, Bahria Town and most housing schemes, 1 marla = 225 sq ft (25 sq yd). In land revenue records 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft (30.25 sq yd). Some areas use 250 sq ft. Check your allotment letter or fard to see which applies.
How many square feet are in 1 kanal?+
1 kanal = 20 marla. That is 4,500 sq ft (500 sq yd) on the 225 sq ft marla, 5,000 sq ft on the 250 sq ft marla, and 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd) on the 272.25 sq ft revenue marla.
Is a 25 × 45 ft plot exactly 5 marla?+
25 × 45 ft = 1,125 sq ft, which is exactly 5 marla at 225 sq ft. On the revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft the same plot is only about 4.13 marla.
How many marla and kanal are in one acre?+
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. That is exactly 160 marla or 8 kanal on the 272.25 sq ft revenue marla, and 193.6 marla (9.68 kanal) on the 225 sq ft marla.
Why do DHA and the patwari use different marla sizes?+
The patwari system keeps the British-era revenue unit based on a 5.5 ft karam (272.25 sq ft per marla). LDA's building regulations and most planned schemes, including DHA, define the marla as a round 25 sq yd (225 sq ft), which is easier for planning plots.
What is a square yard (gaz) and how does it relate to marla?+
1 square yard = 9 sq ft. One 225 sq ft marla is 25 sq yd and one 272.25 sq ft marla is 30.25 sq yd. Karachi and Islamabad often quote plots in square yards, for example 120, 240 or 500 sq yd.
How many square metres is 10 marla?+
10 marla is 2,250 sq ft, about 209.03 m², on the 225 sq ft marla. On the 272.25 sq ft marla it is 2,722.5 sq ft, about 252.93 m².
Is the area in my ad covered area or plot area?+
Marla and kanal describe plot (land) area. A house's covered area is the built floor space across all storeys, so a 5 marla double-storey house can have more than 2,000 sq ft covered. Our construction cost calculator works from covered area.
