(65 โˆ’ 50) รท 50 ร— 100 = 30%

X is Y% of what? (reverse percentage)

Percentage points vs percent

+1 pp
= a 25% relative increase in the rate
5% โˆ’ 4% = 1 percentage points; (5 โˆ’ 4) รท 4 ร— 100 = 25%

Percentage points (pp) are the simple difference between two percentages. Percent change measures that difference relative to where you started. An interest rate moving from 4% to 5% is up 1 percentage point โ€” but 25% higher.

Percentage formulas cheat sheet
  • X% of Y = X รท 100 ร— Y
  • X as % of Y = X รท Y ร— 100
  • % change = (new โˆ’ old) รท old ร— 100
  • Whole = part รท (X รท 100)
  • Y + X% = Y ร— (1 + X รท 100)
  • Y โˆ’ X% = Y ร— (1 โˆ’ X รท 100)
๐Ÿ’ก Pro tips
  • โ†’Percent change always divides by the starting value โ€” swap the order and you get a different answer.
  • โ†’To undo a percentage increase, divide by (1 + rate) โ€” don't subtract the same percentage.
  • โ†’Compare two rates in percentage points; describe growth of one rate in percent.
  • โ†’Moving a percentage's decimal point two places left turns it into a multiplier: 7.5% โ†’ 0.075.

What is the Percentage Calculator?

This Percentage Calculator answers the six percentage questions people search for most, all on one page and all live: what is X% of Y, X is what percent of Y, the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers, the reverse percentage (X is Y% of what), adding or subtracting a percentage, and the difference between percentage points and percent. There is no Calculate button to press โ€” type a number and the answer appears instantly, together with the exact formula used, so you can check the working or copy it into a spreadsheet.

A percentage is simply a fraction of 100. "Percent" means "per hundred", so 15% is 15 รท 100 = 0.15. To find 15% of 80, multiply: 0.15 ร— 80 = 12. To find what percent 30 is of 120, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 30 รท 120 ร— 100 = 25%. To reverse a percentage โ€” say you know 45 is 15% of some number โ€” divide by the percentage as a decimal: 45 รท 0.15 = 300. Those three rearrangements of part = percent ร— whole cover almost every everyday percentage problem, from tips and test scores to commission and tax.

Percentage change compares a new value with an old one: (new โˆ’ old) รท old ร— 100. A price that rises from 50 to 65 has increased by (65 โˆ’ 50) รท 50 ร— 100 = 30%, while a figure that falls from 80 to 60 has decreased by 25%. The starting value always goes on the bottom, which is why percentage changes are not symmetrical: a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall does not bring you back to where you started. 100 rises to 150, then falls by half to 75 โ€” a net 25% loss. The same trap catches people with salary cuts, stock prices and stacked discounts.

Adding or subtracting a percentage is the shortcut shops, accountants and payroll teams use every day. Adding 20% to 150 gives 150 ร— 1.20 = 180; subtracting 20% gives 150 ร— 0.80 = 120. Multiplying by (1 + rate) or (1 โˆ’ rate) is faster and less error-prone than working out the percentage and then adding it on. It is how VAT and sales tax are added to a net price, how a markup is applied to cost, and how a sale discount is taken off a price tag.

Percentage points and percent are not the same thing, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in news reports and financial documents. If a loan rate moves from 4% to 5%, it has risen by 1 percentage point, but the rate itself is 25% higher because (5 โˆ’ 4) รท 4 ร— 100 = 25. Use percentage points when you compare two rates that are already percentages โ€” interest rates, tax rates, unemployment, conversion rates, election shares โ€” and use percent when you describe how much one of them has grown relative to its starting level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?+
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 25% of 360 is 0.25 ร— 360 = 90, and 8% of 2,500 is 0.08 ร— 2,500 = 200.
How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?+
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 17.5 out of 340 is 17.5 รท 340 ร— 100 โ‰ˆ 5.15%.
How do I calculate percentage increase?+
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. A rent rise from 1,200 to 1,500 is (1,500 โˆ’ 1,200) รท 1,200 ร— 100 = 25%.
How do I calculate percentage decrease?+
Use the same formula as an increase โ€” (new โˆ’ old) รท old ร— 100 โ€” and the answer will be negative. A drop from 80 to 60 is (60 โˆ’ 80) รท 80 ร— 100 = โˆ’25%, a 25% decrease.
How do I find the original number from a percentage?+
Divide the known amount by the percentage written as a decimal. If 45 is 15% of a number, the number is 45 รท 0.15 = 300.
How do I add a percentage to a number?+
Multiply the number by 1 plus the percentage as a decimal. Adding 18% to 4,000 gives 4,000 ร— 1.18 = 4,720. To subtract a percentage, multiply by 1 minus the decimal instead.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?+
Percentage points are the arithmetic difference between two percentages; percent is the relative change. A rate going from 4% to 5% rose 1 percentage point, which is a 25% increase in the rate.
Why doesn't a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease cancel out?+
Because each percentage is calculated from a different starting value. 100 increased by 50% is 150, and 50% of 150 is 75, so you end up 25% below where you started.
