Body Fat Calculator

Estimate your body fat percentage with the US Navy tape-measure method, see your ACE category, fat and lean mass, and compare with a BMI-based estimate.

Informational only, not medical advice. Tape-measure methods give an estimate with an error of several percentage points and cannot diagnose any condition. For an accurate assessment, or if you are concerned about your weight or body fat, talk to a doctor or other qualified health professional.

What this means
An estimated 20.3% body fat puts you in the ACE average range for men (18โ€“24%). That is about 16.6 kg of fat and 65.4 kg of lean mass. The BMI-based estimate of 22.9% is close to the tape-measure result. Home methods can be several points off, so track the trend over time rather than a single reading.
Formula used
Body fat % = 86.010 ร— log10(waist โˆ’ neck) โˆ’ 70.041 ร— log10(height) + 36.76 (inches) = 86.010 ร— log10(35.4 โˆ’ 15.0) โˆ’ 70.041 ร— log10(70.1) + 36.76 = 20.3%
Fat mass = weight ร— body fat % ; Lean mass = weight โˆ’ fat mass
Deurenberg: 1.20 ร— BMI + 0.23 ร— age โˆ’ 10.8 ร— sex (1 = male, 0 = female) โˆ’ 5.4 = 22.9%

How to measure accurately (and common mistakes)
  • Use a flexible, non-stretch tape; keep it level and snug without pressing into the skin.
  • Measure on bare skin in the morning, before eating, after a normal breath out โ€” don't suck in.
  • Men: waist at the navel. Women: waist at the narrowest point, hips at the widest part of the buttocks.
  • Neck: just below the Adam's apple, tape sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Take each measurement 2โ€“3 times and use the average; small errors in the neck change the result a lot.
๐Ÿ’ก Next steps
  • โ†’Re-measure every 2โ€“4 weeks under the same conditions to track the trend.
  • โ†’Check your BMI and waist-to-height ratio for another view of weight-related risk.
  • โ†’Use the Calorie Calculator โ€” add your body fat % to unlock the Katch-McArdle formula.
  • โ†’For a precise measurement, ask about a DEXA scan; for health concerns, talk to your doctor.

What is the Body Fat Calculator?

A body fat calculator estimates what percentage of your body weight is fat. Unlike BMI, which only compares weight with height, body fat percentage separates fat from lean mass (muscle, bone, organs and water), so it gives a better picture for muscular people and for anyone tracking changes in body composition. This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method โ€” the tape-measure formula used for decades by the US military โ€” and shows your result against the body fat categories published by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

The US Navy method was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984 from measurements of navy personnel compared with underwater weighing. With all measurements in inches, men use: body fat % = 86.010 ร— log10(waist โˆ’ neck) โˆ’ 70.041 ร— log10(height) + 36.76. Women add the hip measurement: body fat % = 163.205 ร— log10(waist + hip โˆ’ neck) โˆ’ 97.684 ร— log10(height) โˆ’ 78.387. Metric inputs are converted to inches before applying the formula, so metric and imperial give the same answer.

Worked example: a 35-year-old man, 178 cm tall and 82 kg, with a 38 cm neck and 90 cm waist (measured at the navel). Converted to inches that is a 70.1 in height, 15.0 in neck and 35.4 in waist, giving an estimated body fat of 20.3%. On the ACE scale for men that is in the 'average' range (18โ€“24%). His fat mass is about 16.6 kg and lean mass about 65.4 kg. His BMI is 25.9, and the BMI-based Deurenberg formula estimates 22.9% โ€” close to, but a little higher than, the tape-measure result.

ACE groups body fat for women as essential fat 10โ€“13%, athletes 14โ€“20%, fitness 21โ€“24%, average 25โ€“31% and obese 32% or more; for men essential fat 2โ€“5%, athletes 6โ€“13%, fitness 14โ€“17%, average 18โ€“24% and obese 25% or more. Women naturally carry more essential fat than men for reproductive health, which is why their ranges are higher. The ranges are not age-adjusted, and body fat tends to rise with age, so compare yourself mainly with your own previous results.

As a second opinion, the calculator shows the Deurenberg BMI-based estimate (British Journal of Nutrition, 1991): body fat % = 1.20 ร— BMI + 0.23 ร— age โˆ’ 10.8 ร— sex โˆ’ 5.4, where sex is 1 for men and 0 for women. Its authors noted it slightly overestimates body fat in people with obesity, and like BMI it cannot see muscle. Every home method has an error of several percentage points; DEXA scans or underwater weighing are more accurate. Use this estimate to track trends, not to diagnose anything.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Choose metric or imperial units and select your sex โ€” women also need a hip measurement.
  2. 2Enter your age, height and weight.
  3. 3Measure your neck just below the Adam's apple, sloping slightly down at the front.
  4. 4Measure your waist: men at the navel, women at the narrowest point; women also measure the hips at the widest point of the buttocks.
  5. 5Read your body fat %, ACE category, fat mass and lean mass, and compare with the BMI-based estimate.
  6. 6Use the target table to see the weight at a lower body fat if you keep your muscle, and re-measure every 2โ€“4 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?+
Like other field methods, it can differ from laboratory measurements such as underwater weighing or DEXA by a few percentage points, and careful measuring matters a lot. A later Navy validation study (Kujawa and Hodgdon) found it predicted body fat about as well as skinfold equations. It is less reliable for very lean, very muscular or very large bodies.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?+
On the ACE scale, 'fitness' and 'average' ranges โ€” about 14โ€“24% for men and 21โ€“31% for women โ€” are typical healthy ranges for adults. 25%+ for men and 32%+ for women is classed as obese.
Where exactly should I measure my waist?+
For this formula, men measure horizontally at the level of the navel; women measure at the narrowest part of the waist. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and measure after a normal exhale.
Why is my result different from my smart scale?+
Smart scales use bioelectrical impedance, which is affected by hydration, meals and exercise. Different methods can differ by several percentage points. Pick one method and use it consistently to track change.
Is body fat percentage better than BMI?+
It is more informative because it separates fat from muscle, but it is harder to measure accurately. Many clinicians use BMI together with waist circumference as a simple screen.
How much fat can I lose per week?+
A safe rate of weight loss is about 0.5โ€“1 kg (1โ€“2 lb) a week (NHS). Combined with strength training and enough protein, most of that can come from fat.
Can women use the same formula as men?+
No. Women's formula adds a hip measurement because women store more fat around the hips and thighs. Choose Female and enter all three measurements.
What is essential fat?+
Fat your body needs for normal functions such as hormones, nerves and organ protection โ€” about 2โ€“5% for men and 10โ€“13% for women (ACE). Going below it is unhealthy.
