- โCompare each post against your own average engagement rate, not just industry benchmarks.
- โComments, shares and saves signal stronger interest than likes โ prompt for them in captions.
- โUse views-based rates on TikTok and YouTube, where much of your audience doesn't follow you.
- โWhen vetting influencers, a high follower count with very low engagement is a red flag.

What is the Engagement Rate Calculator?
The Engagement Rate Calculator shows what share of your audience actually interacts with your content. Choose a platform, decide whether to measure against followers, reach or views, then enter likes, comments, shares and saves for one post or the totals for a batch of posts. You get the engagement rate, the average interactions per post and a rating โ low, average, good or excellent โ calibrated for that platform, because a 1% rate means something very different on X than it does on TikTok.
There are two main formulas. Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + shares + saves) รท followers ร 100. It is the most common way to compare accounts publicly because follower counts are visible to everyone, which is why brands and agencies use it when vetting influencers. Engagement rate by reach or views = total interactions รท reach (or views) ร 100. It measures how compelling a post was to the people who actually saw it, which makes it the better metric on discovery-driven platforms like TikTok and YouTube, where many viewers do not follow you at all. LinkedIn analytics reports engagement per impression by default, so the calculator switches to the matching basis when you pick each platform.
Worked example: an Instagram account with 25,000 followers publishes 10 posts in a month that collect 4,200 likes, 350 comments, 180 shares and 270 saves โ 5,000 interactions in total. That is 500 interactions per post on average, so the engagement rate by followers is 500 รท 25,000 ร 100 = 2.0%, which rates as good for Instagram. If the same 10 posts reached 120,000 accounts in total, the engagement rate by reach would be 5,000 รท 120,000 ร 100 โ 4.2%. Both numbers are correct; they just answer different questions.
Benchmarks have been falling for years as feeds become more algorithmic and crowded. Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark data puts average engagement rate by followers for brand accounts at roughly 2.7% on TikTok, 0.45% on Instagram, 0.13% on Facebook and 0.10% on X. Individual creators, smaller accounts and niche communities usually beat brand averages, often by a wide margin, so the rating bands here are deliberately conservative and blend brand and creator ranges. LinkedIn figures vary the most between studies, typically landing somewhere around 2โ4% per impression.
Use engagement rate as a diagnostic, not a vanity score. Compare posts against your own average to see which formats, hooks and topics resonate, and track the trend month over month rather than obsessing over a single post. Weight high-intent actions โ comments, shares and saves โ above likes, since they signal stronger interest and are favoured by most ranking algorithms. And watch for red flags when evaluating influencers: a huge follower count with a tiny engagement rate, or a sudden spike in generic comments, can indicate purchased followers or engagement pods.
